Game Five: Preserve Your Lineage

Goal of the game is to build up your ancestral line throughout the three stages of the game, Past, Present, and Future.

Two players start out in the past stage of the game setting up resources (Trees, Wheat, Minerals, Water)

By the second stage of the game the resources have flourished and expanded in number. Players are now able to set up settlements nearby resources.

By the third stage of the game all settlements have expanded into cities and all resources are closely regulated since in the future resources are scarce. Players use their collected resources to build expansions to their cities and attempting to steal other resources from the opposing player. Once a player has control over all resources they will be able to eradicate the opposing player to win.

Past Stage Rules:

Players set 1 of each resource down on the game board and then alternate to the next player. Players determine who goes first among themselves.

Players roll two dice, 1 D6 and 1 D4 to determine grid coordinates. If a player rolls a previously occupied location they must roll again until there are 8 separate spots with resources (2 of each 4 types of resources). After each player has placed their resources they each may place one village card on the board. Village Cards must be placed adjacent to at least 1 resource, however if the player is able to place a village between several resources that will be an advantage later in the game.

Present Stage Rules:

The resources have now quadrupled in quantity as well as the village spaces, which are now called settlements. The goal of the Present stage is to extract resources by landing your token on them. Movement and Extraction are based on rolling a D6 to determine how many spaces a player may move and how many moves are needed to extract a resource. (Trees require 0 moves to extract, when a player lands on the square they automatically gain that resource. Wheat requires 1 move, Water requires 2 moves, and Minerals require 3 moves. After all the resources have been collected the Present stage ends.

Future Stage Rules:

In the third stage the two settlements have now become cities. All resources that have been collected in the Present stage are now recorded, multiplied by four, and stockpiled for each city. The goal of the third stage is to use your resources to create expansions to your cities by placing three resource tokens of at least any two different resource types stacked on top of each other in adjacent spaces to your city. Players will roll a D4 to determine how many expansions may be placed on their cities per turn. Once a player has placed 5 expansions they now have the ability to send out drones (nun tokens) to opposing player expansions to steal resources from each other by chipping away at expansions 1 resource at a time. When controlling drones players roll a D6 to determine movement along the board (1 move = 2grids of travel) at a time. When drones have moved to an opposing expansion, they must roll a 4 or better to take a resource from an expansion. If they roll a 6 they remove the entire expansion in one turn. All resources taken from an opposing player are added to the attacking player’s stockpile. Drones may also be used to defend expansions. If they are adjacent to an expansion then an opposing drone may not attack that one. Every five expansions a player builds yields an extra drone to control. The goal is to eliminate enemy expansions to zero. The final move is to land a drone to the enemy’s city once it has no more expansions to win the game.

Time Travel: Once drones have been activated, players may decide to travel back in time by placing 8 resource tokens (4 of each type stacked on top of each other) on two adjacent squares. This move allows the player to go back in time to the past stage to either add or remove 1 resource from the past, having consequences for the future. If the player adds a resource then they are awarded 4 more resource tokens of that type to add to their stockpile. Conversely if they decide to remove a resource than the opposing players stockpile is decreased by 4 tokens of that resource type. The eight initial tokens are retained for use but to travel back in time again requires the player to place three groups of 4 resource tokens. After time travel the tokens used may be used for expansion building.

Required materials:

Approximately 40 tokens

4 groups of 10 different colored tokens to represent resources.

1D6 and 1D4 to be used accordingly.

Various nun tokens to represent drones.

2 player tokens for use in Present stage.

Lots of patience in reading the rules. (sorry)
