Rapid Paper-based Game Design

 

 

 Challenge 1:

 

make a game for 2 players, using an 8" x 8" playing surface (paper or other), 3 geometric solids, and a color spinner or a 30 second timer. The game rules should be written or typed onto a separate piece of paper. The game should be completable in 10 minutes max.

 

Name of the game: Mine Sweeping – Another Version

 

Materials:

-        8 x 8 of squares gameboard

-        A color spinner

-        2 human tokens

-        A lot of round tokens of red and green

-        Electronic timer

 

Rules:

This game designed for 2 players

Each color in the color spinner represent different rules:

Green – Change to move diagonal for 1 step in any direction (Totally 1 step)

Orange – Move Up and Down for 2 steps in any direction (Totally 3 steps)

Blue – opponent stop 1 round

Purple – Choose opponent’s human token into any place in the map, however you should stop next round, and your opponent can move 2 steps diagonally.

Red – Rest 1 round

Yellow – Add 1 of your color tokens in any place on the map.

 

Players choose their human tokens, then choose their main color tokens (1 player all red tokens, and the other one all green tokens). Originally, each player can move 1 step up and down. Each time a player moves, he/she should put color tokens in their former steps. A player could move to a step that already have the other player’s color tokens, but he/she could not replace color tokens. Before player move, players should use color spinner and get a color, then follow the color rules above. There are 2 bomb areas in the gameboard. If a player got purple, he/she could put the other player into the bomb area.

1-     Then next round the player who were put into the bomb area will spin the color. If he/she got green 2 times, then the other player win the game.

2-     If he/she got purple, the danger transfer to the former player, again 2 times spin for green will suddenly lose the game.

 

Two ways to win:

1-     In10 minutes, the player who has the most colors in their color tokens.

2-     The player who murder the other player by bomb.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Challenge 2:

 

make a game for 3 players, using an 8.5" x 14" playing surface (paper or other), any (non-zero) number of figurative (looking like people or animals) tokens, with no spinners nor dice, where victory is achieved by (at least) two of the players collaborating. The game rules should be written or typed onto a separate sheet of paper. The game must be completable in 10 minutes max, and learnable in 5 minutes max (a total time envelope of 15 minutes). 

 

Name of the game: Steal the Egg

 

Materials:

-        11 x 8 of squares gameboard with painted map

-        2 human tokens

-        3 dinosaur tokens in 3 different color

-        3 identity card for dinosaurs

-        1 egg token

 

Rules:

This game designed for 3 players

-        2 Players play 2 humans and 1 player play 3 dinosaurs in this game.

-        “Human” can move 3 steps each round in Up and Down direction.

-        “Dinosaurs” can move 0-2 steps each round in UP and Down direction.

-        Game begin with the player who play "Dinosaurs".

-        2 players of “Human” have a skill called “Stand Together” twice totally. This skill can let one player directly move to the other player in the place of any square 8 squares surround this player.

-        There is one “attacker” dinosaur inside of 3 dinosaurs. In the beginning of the game, the player who play 3 dinosaurs will draw a card, the card showed a color dinosaur, and this dinosaur will be the “attacker”. Only “attacker” dinosaur could attack human. Attacker can move 0-3 steps in Up and Down direction. (Hint: It is dangerous to show the attacker at the beginning rounds, don’t easily let human know which one is the attacker.) When human attack the “Attacker”, this human will die.

-        Each Human and Attacker have one chance to move in any direction freely for 3 steps in their rounds.

-        Human can attack normal dinosaurs, if they attack the right target, this player can move extra 3 steps in Up and Down direction. Also, the player who player 3 dinosaurs will lose that dinosaur token.

-        Dinosaurs can’t go into the river area in the map, only human can go through this area.

 

Two ways to win:

-        Dinosaurs: Attacker eat all human/ Human didn’t steal the egg in 10 minutes.

-        Human: Any human steal the egg. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Challenge 3:

 

Formal Constraints:

    1. Materials:
      1. One sheet of blank paper to record rules
      2. One gridded surface to use for gameplay, you may choose the size of the grid units and the size of the surface
      3. Two figure (i.e. human shaped) tokens
      4. You may use abstract shapes to indicate setting or barriers 
    2. Using one, and only one, mechanic
      1. create a non-violent game that places two players in opposition
      2. each player will be represented by one of the figurative tokens
      3. the gameplay will occur on the gridded surface
      4. movement rules cannot be dictated by a dice roll
    3. Gameplay duration cannot exceed 10 minutes from start of play to finish.

-        34 Action Cards, include 20 “Duel”, 7 “Dodge”, and 7 “Evade”

-        36 Movement Cards, include 20 “1 Step”, 8 “2 Step”, 8 “3 Step”

-        2 Shield Cards, each shield have 3 “hearts”.

-        All action cards and movement cards will be reused if there’s no card to draw, depend how player use them.

 

Rules:

This is a competitive game designed for 2 players

-        There are 2 types of cards: Movement cards and Movement cards.

-        A player can only use maximum 1 movement and 1 action cards each round.

-        For Action cards, when a player “Duel” the other player, the other player could:

                1. Use “Duel”, too. And this action means counter “Duel”. After counter duel, each player could only use “Duel” until a player doesn’t have “Duel” any more, and he/she lose 1 heart in the shield card.  

                2. Dodge: Opponent draw one card from action cards, the player who use Dodge draw 2 movement cards.

                3. Evade: After using Evade, this player can use one movement card for moving steps for one more time.

                4. When a player use Evade or Dodge to try to response “Duel”, the other player who use Duel first can use 2 “Duel” to counter, regard as counter “Duel” status again.

-        At the beginning of the game, each player has 1 shield with 3 hearts, and each of them draw 3 action cards and 3 movement cards. Then, two players do Rock-Scissors-Paper, winner plays first. Player can use Duel when then are in the same line of squares. When a player move to a new step by using movement cards, he/she should draw 1 movement card and 1 action card. However, the player should only keep 8 cards in the end of each round (Not include the shield card).

-        Each player should follow the numbers to move.

-        When a player reach “Star”, back to mark “Square”, however, he could stay at “Star” for 1 round.

-        Shield can only help each player from losing duel for 2 times. The player who win a duel could have extra 1 round move.

 

Two ways to win:

-        A player destroys the other player’s shield

Conceptual Constraint: make a game about nervousness.

 

Name of the game: Mystery of identity

 

Materials:

-        A Painted and Designed gameboard

-        5 green human-like tokens.

-        5 identity cards

 

Rules:

This is a game about nervousness designed for 5 players

-        There are 3 humans, 1 angel and 1 zombie king at the beginning of the game.

-        At the beginning of the game, each player draw an identity card secretly, do not show the identity to each other.

-        When a player was attacked, both player show their identity cards.

-        Simple Movement Rule:

  1. Zombie king can move 1-3 steps
  2. Zombie can move 1-2 steps
  3. Angel can move 1-3 steps
  4. Human can move 1-2 steps

-        Zombie king: When zombie king attack a human, human become to Zombie to continue attack human round and round, and use the movement rule as Zombie. Only Zombie king can lie to human when human use chance to ask identity. Zombie king can fake as human if this player only move 2 steps rounds by rounds. Zombie king cannot attack angel. Zombie king have 2 life. Zombie have 1 life.

-        Human: 3 Human do not know each other’s identity. Totally human can only have 1 chance to show his/her identity. (Which means when the acting come to a player who player human, he/she could show the identity in front of all the players, however, the other two players who play human will understand that they have no chance to use this chance anymore.) Then this player has a chance to ask 2 of any other player his/her identity secretly, and those chosen players should also answer secretly. (Do not let other players know)

-        Angel: When move to human’s same step. Protect human from Zombie/ Zombie king’s attack for 2 rounds. Thus, this action means angel protect human 2 times. However, Human can choose to leave this step in the second round, so that angel only protect human 1 time. Only angel can stay at the center area for 2 rounds (Angel should show the identity card if no one know this player’s identity) Angel can hit zombie and zombie king. When angel attack zombie, player who play this zombie lose game. When angel beat the zombie king in the same step in the map, Zombie king lose 1 life, however, Angel should stop for 3 rounds.

-        Advanced Movement Rule: After “Circle” marked step, each player should move forward, then each player can move to purple areas when they on “Circle” step. However, if human consider move to purple area, they should move to a new “circle” not next to number of line of their origin circle in the line of their start number. (For example, a player who play human started at “1”, then he/she decided to go into purple area, so that he/she must move to “3”, “4, “5”. “6”, or “7”’s circle, then he/she can move forward. This is because the circle in the line of “2”, and “8” are next to “1”.) If any player do not decided to move forward to center area, he/she can choose to move freely in purple and circle path. When a player move to center, he/she can move to any number, and he/she will be calculated as “been to center once”.

 

Rule of winner:

-        Human: Totally human have been to center area for 3 times.

-        Zombie King: make 2 humans become zombie.

-        Angel: Kill Zombie King.

Name of the gameRevisit of “Duel or Escape?”

 

Materials:

-        36 Movement Cards, include 15 “1 Step”, 4 “1 Step Rush”, 8 “2 Step”, 4 “2 Step Rush”, 4 “3 Step”, 1 “3 Step Rush”

-        2 Shield Cards, each shield has 3 “hearts”.

-        At the beginning of the game, each player has 1 shield with 3 hearts, and each of them draw 3 action cards and 3 movement cards. Then, two players do Rock-Scissors-Paper, winner plays first. Player can use Duel when then are in the same line of squares. When a player move to a new step by using movement cards, he/she should draw 1 movement card and 1 action card. Conceptual Constraint: make a game about rules.

 

Name of the game: Lucky “10”

 

Materials:

-        Poker Cards Only (All 54)

-        Bit timer for counting rounds.

 

Rules:

This is a game about rules designed for 2-6 players

-        Player Rules: At the beginning of the game, each player will have:

               1. 6 poker cards (5-6 Players)

               2. 7 poker cards (4 Players)

               3. 9 poker cards (3 Players)

               4.12 poker cards (2 Players)

-        Normal Cards: 2 – 9: At the beginning of the of the game, start from the person who have the minimum number from 2 – 9. Then he decided clockwise or anticlockwise. Then the number goes one by one. (like 2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-2) If the player who haven’t got the next card, he should say “no card”, “break link” or something, then the other players could use rule cards, it depends on who’s first using rule card after the player mentioned “No card”. After the “rule card” round start at the next player, he/she can use any number he/she has from 2 – 9.

-        Cards with rules:

               A: 1 - Choose 3 players, give each player 1 card

                    2 – Draw 2 cards.

               J: Give 2 cards to one player / Receive 1 card from other players

               Q: 1 - Defend “A” or “J”, draw 2 cards

                    2 - Give 1 card to other players & draw 2 card

               K: 1 - Counter “Q”, then give 2 cards to other players. (could be the same player)

                    2- Give 2 cards to other players. / Receive 2 cards from other players (Can be different players)

               Joker: 1 - Drop 2 card / Draw 3 cards

                    2 - Counter all the rules card above, then give / receive a card from other players 

-        About Card “10”: You can make a rule for yourselves, or for one of other players. However, you cannot stop other players more than 1 round. You also cannot receive or give, or make rules for more than 2 cards: For example, (hint):

             1. Instead any number between 2-9

                   2. Someone stop 1 round

                   3. I’ll give someone 2 of my card ()

                   4. The next round no one can use Joker.

                   5. I’ll counter someone’s rule of “10”

-        Most importantly: If a player has a card with defend or counter rules like “Q” “K” “Joker” “10”, he/she can use those to counter other players’ rule immediately. Normally, every player should draw 1 card each new round. 

 

Ways to win:

-        Rapidly Win - The player who have no poker card in his hand in 8 rounds.

-        Last man standing - After 8 rounds, who has more cards in his hand. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Challenge 7:

 

Conceptual Constraint: make a game that consumes itself 

 

Name of the game: Multiple Traps.  

 

Materials:

-        4 group of tokens in red, green, blue and yellow.

 

Rules:

This is a competitive game designed for 4 players.

-        Each player chooses a color, and he/she will get 24 tokens in the color they choose.

-        Each player will lose 2 tokens at the beginning of each round.

-        Color Spin Rule:

                1. When a player spin for his/her own color, next round this player only lose own token. After that, he/she could choose to spin one more time or not, if still his/her own color, he/she will lose no token next round. Move to another player

                2. When a player spin a color for other players: He/she can either let this player lose 2 tokens, or let this player to choose other player/players except the instigator.

                3. When a player spin a color not exist in tokens: He/she lose 1 token directly.

       -        Rule of Duel: If there are 2 players left, each round loses 1 token, and player who spin his/her own color lose no token next round. Then if he/she spin again and also the own color, next round get 1 token. Also, in these two players, if a player has less than 5 tokens, will have 1 chance to skip spin. 

-        Revive Rule: A player who have run out of tokens in former steps, if someone spin to his/her color, the player who run out of tokens can choose to revive or not, if he/she choose no, the color will regard not exist. However, if someone spin to that color again, this player can still revive by his/her own answer. Each player can revive once with 5 tokens. 

 

Winner:

Challenge 8:

 

Formal Constraint and Conceptual Constraint, at the same time: Unfolds, that is to say... the mechanic should be "unfolding", and the idea should be about unfolding. 

 

Name of the game: Fake

 

Materials:

-        10 groups of number tokens from 0-9, each group 10 token.

-        4 groups of sign tokens “+”, “-”, “x”, and “/”, each group 5 token.

-        A timer set for 15 min

 

Rules:

This is a game about Unfold, designed for 4 players.

At the beginning of the game, all tokens covered and each player draw 10 tokens. (Please do not let other players to see you tokens) Start from one player who win the Rock-Scissors-Paper. Then each player should put the token in order 0-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0-1-2-3-4… (Number tokens should be covered, but if you use signs, you should not cover the sign and show in the line) The player who use sign should follow a number, then the next number changed based on the last number of the calculation. However, a player could not use sign tokens if he/she only have 2 tokens left.

For example: 0-1-2-3-4-(X)(5) = (20) (The last number is 0)-1-2-3-4-5…

Rule about Fake: All players can do “fake” which means he/she can put a fake number instead the number in the order.

For example: 0-1-2-3-(9) (I said “This is 4” but I put 9)-5-6-(+) (Sign can be use as fake number)-8-9-0

Each player could doubt other players when they put a token.

It the doubt is right: The player who use “Fake number” totally draw 3 tokens, and this player should also draw tokens depend on how many player doubt him/her. So maximum draw 6 tokens (If all three players doubt another player).  

If the doubt is wrong: These players draw 3 tokens each.

 

Winning rule:

-        After 15 minutes, the player who has less tokens, or

-        There is no more tokens to draw, the player who has less tokens.
