Rapid Paper-Based Game Design

Challenge 1 - Friend or Foe

Creator Statement:

For this game, I wanted to create a relatively minimal game that featured an unexpected mechanic. In the game, the two players are simultaneously competing with one another while trying to defeat an enemy "player" that is advancing towards the players' home base. With this mechanic, the game can

Rules:

Friend or Foe

The Objective of this game is to get one's player to the "enemy base" before their ally does. While Doing so, each player must keep in mind that if the enemy (the blue piece) reaches the home base first, neither player wins the game.

To Begin:

  1. Each player names his/her favorite Celine Dion song.

  2. Whichever song that was namedfirst in alphabetical order spins first.

  3. Each turn, a player spins and competes each action accordingly:

Blue – Move your player forward 2 spaces.

Yellow – Move your player back 1space.

Purple – Move your player back 1 space, and then have the enemy or your ally move forward 1 space.

Green – Spin again.

Red – Enemy moves forward one space.

Orange – Move your player + your ally forward 1 space.

Remember that there are only 10 minutes so, set a timer before you begin. If the timer runs out before either player reaches the enemy base, then the game is over and no one wins.

Challenge 2 - All or Nun

Creator Statement:

For this challenge, I focused on creating a game that is relatively simple, but conceptually cohesive. When looking at the human figurines available, I immediately wanted to use nuns. The result was a comedic game revolving around the culture of Christianity.

Rules:

All or Nun

The objective of the game is for all three nuns (players) to make it to Heaven before the end of the game and bring god's grace to their convent. In order to make it to Heaven, the nuns' good deeds (good points) must outweigh their sins (bad points) by the time that the deck of task cards has been used up or the 10 minute time limit has been reached.

During the game, players take turns drawing task cards that present challenges for the player to complete. If the player is successful in completing the task, he/she will receive a certain amount of good deeds and vice versa with sins when the player fails the task. Each player has been given their own Journal (pad) in which they can keep track (tally) of their Good Deeds and Sins throughout the course of the game.

Setup:

Place the deck of Task cards in the Convent.

All 3 players must pick a nun and place their nun in the Earth section of the playing board.

Whichever player's nun is closest to God (the Heaven section of the board) gets to go first.

To Begin:

Draw a Task card from the Convent and attempt the challenge written on the card.

If the challenge is completed, add the corresponding amount of Good Deed or Sins to your tally as dictated by the card.

Godspeed, sisters.

Challenge 3 - Nonviolent, New-Age Ninjas

Creator Statement:

For this challenge, we were given our first mechanical constraint that came close to acting as a conceptual constraint. At the time of this challenge, I was on a bit of a Kitaro kick and decided that I wanted to incorporate that into this game. The conceptual mechanic was to make a game that featured a non-violent mechanic, and New-Age music seemed like a great theme to base it all on.

Rules:

Nonviolent, New-Age Ninjas

The objective of this game is to arrive at the Temple of Kitaro-San before your opponent does. Before a player can enter the temple,he/she must collect at least one Kitaro album. A player will use Nonviolent movement cards to advance toward the dojos that house all of the Kitaro albums. In order to acquire the album, a player must complete the challenge associated with the dojo that they are in. If the player fails the challenge, then the album is automatically rewarded to their opponent. Whichever player reaches the temple with the mostfavorable pairings of Kitaro'salbums wins the game.

To Begin:

1. Player 1 will compliment player 2 and vice versa. Whichever player gave the better compliment will begin the game.

2. Said player will draw a movement card. He/she can move up, down and sideways accordingly.

Once both players have reached the temple, Kitaro's intended curation card will reveal which album pairings that ring favorable (some albums apply to multiple pairings):

Challenge 4: Multitasking Madness

Creator Statement:

After seeing David French's game that had to do with unstacking blocks, I wanted to create a game that involved something other then a movement mechanic on a traditional game board. The conceptual idea of the game revolves around the fact that millennials are living in such a pressurized world and multitasking their way through numerous activities and responsibilities.

Rules:

Multitasking Madness

The objective of this game is for a player to keep up with all of the tasks presented as they increase in intensity from round to round. The tasks are ongoing and require the players to multitask in order to win the game.

These are the tasks:

-Balance cubes on your head

-Hold balls in a spoon

-Recite a story adlib style with other players

The tasks will change as so:

Round 1 – Balance 1 cube on your head, gold one ball in a spoon, add to the story in a circle with the other players.

Round 2 – Balance 2 cubes (stacked) on your head, hold 2 balls in a spoon, add to the story with no more than 3 seconds on hesitation.

Round 3 – Balance 3 cubes (stacked) on your head, hold 2 balls in a spoon, add to the story with no more than 2 seconds hesitation or any words that start with the letter 'S'.

Round 4 – Balance 4 cubes (stacked) on your head, hold 2 balls in a spoon, add to the story with no more than 1 second of hesitation or any words that start with the letters 'S' or 'R'.

Round 5 – Same as round 4, except that a player must now balance on one foot.

Each round lasts for 30 seconds. The last player standing wins the game. If two players make it past round 5, then they engage in a staring contest to see who wins the game. If 3 or more players make it past round 5 then Rafael gets to decide who wins.

In order for this to be an official game, Slayer's "Raining Blood" must be playing in the background.

To Setup:

  1. Each player must set up for round 1's challenges (1 cube, a spoon with 1 ball).

To Begin:

  1. The player who's last name is closer to Z starts.

  2. The ad-libbing will go clockwise from the first player.

Challenge 5: All or Nun (Updated)

Creator Statement:

This is the same game from challenge 2, but I made adjustments based on recommendations from my classmates as well as things that I personally wanted to do differently. I redid the game board (with better illustrations) and added a "Purgatory" section. Certain aspects of the game were also tweaked to better fit into the concept.

Rules:

All or Nun

The objective of the game is for all three nuns (players) to make it to Heaven before the end of the game and bring god's grace to their convent. In order to make it to Heaven, the nuns' good deeds (good points)must outweigh their sins (bad points) by the time that the deck of Commandment (task)cards have been used up or the 10 minute time limit has been reached.

During the game, players take turns drawing Commandment (task)cards that present challenges for the player to completeSome challenges can be completed at the time of drawing, whereas others will feature an ongoing challenge that will be completed throughout the course of the game.If the player is successful in completing the task, he/she will receive a certain amount of good deeds and vice versa with sins when the player fails the task. Each player has been given their own Journal (pad) in which they can keep track (tally) of their Good Deeds and Sins throughout the course of the game.

During the game, the Nuns will reside in Purgatory. If a Nun's good deeds and sins are equal by the end of the game then that Nun stays in purgatory and neither wins nor loses.

When the game is over, make sure to add points from the ongoing challenges to the tally.

Setup:

  1. Place the deck of Task cards in the Convent.

  2. Set a timer with a 10 minute limit.

  3. All 3 players must pick a nun and place their nun in the Eartsection of the playing board.

  4. Whichever player's nun is closest to Jake(God Himself) gets to go first.

 To Begin:

  1. Draw a Commandment card from the Convent and attempt the challenge written on the card.

  2. If the challenge is completed, add the corresponding amount of Good Deed or Sins to your tally as dictated by the card.

Godspeed, sisters.

Challenge 6 - Rulebreaker

Creator Statement:

For this challenge, I was going for something that required minimal materials and set up to play. The game's play revolves around cards that are drawn and the consequences that follow them. This game has the capability to be as engaging as the players make it out to be.

Rules:

Rulebreaker

The objective of this game is to abide to the rules quickestDuring each minute-long round, one player will draw a card that tells the player what action must be made whenever the trigger is activatedThe card will then be passed in a circle so that each player can silently read it. The card is then played by the last layer to read the card. After the card is played, the players will just converse and hang out until the time for the round is up.As the game continues, every card remains in play.

It is the responsibility of a chosen moderator to notice which player abides to the rule last whenever the rule trigger is activated. For every time a player is the last to abide to a rule, they will receive one demerit (which they will keep track of). If one rule triggers another, abide the newest rule first, followed by the older rule (so you should have the cards displayed in the chronological order to which they were originally drawn.

The game will end when the cards run out, and whichever player has the least amount of demerits will win. If two or more players are in a tie at the end of the game, the first player to play "All I Do Is Win" by T-Pain off their phone and then declare "all I do is win" while putting their hands up and keeping them their wins.

To begin:

  1. Set a 1 minute timer.

  2. Start timer and have the shortest player draw a card.

  3. Repeat this process until 10 cards have been drawn.

After the game has been completed, read the next page....

Twist: whoever had the second most demerits can challenge the winner to a pushup competition to steal the win.

Challenge 7 - Legends of The Hidden Temple (Temple Run)

Creator Statement:

For this game, I was inspired by an episode of Lucas Bros Moving Co in which the brothers go to Los Angeles for the first time and end up trapped in the old set of Legends of The Hidden Temple. The game board and the challenges are based off of an actual map of a Temple Run from season 1 of the original show.

Rules:

Legends of The Hidden Temple: Temple Runner

The Game

Temple Runner:

The objective for the temple runner is to navigate through the temple and circle back to the entrance before the temple guard captures them or before the temple collapses. The temple runner will have to complete the challenge of each room in the temple in order for the door to open so that the he/she may proceed. In order to win, the temple runner must complete each challenge, collect the sacred object, and exit the temple in safety.

Olmec:

The objective for Olmec is to capture the temple runner with his threeguards or for the temple to collapse. Olmec will get to decide prior to gameplay what rooms the two guards will reside in. Before the Temple Runner even attempts the challenge of the room they must face off with the guard (player 2) in a best two out of three rock paper scissors match. Olmec must win two of these three matches or use one of his special powers in order to win. During gameplay, Olmec can use the following powers one time:

Spirit Guard – When the Temple Runner lands in a space with a guard, Olmec may summon a spirit guard. The rock paper scissors match will be best three out of five.

The Moat – The Temple Runner's time limit reduces by 5 seconds for a room challenge.

Kirk Fogg is Dead– The Temple Runner must complete a challenge with his/her eyes closed.

Gameplay:

  1. A 3 minute timer will be set in15 second intervals.

  2. The Temple Runner will begin their first challenge, and after 15 seconds, the first room will collapse (be removed). This pattern will continue withthe timer continuing to run until the end of the game (each room will be sequentially removed every 15 seconds).

  3. Once the Temple Runner reaches a new room, "destroy" the wall blocking offthe roomOlmec must declare the use of a special power/or if there is aguard in the room prior to the timer/challenge starting.

The Rooms:

Each room holds a challenge. In order to proceed, one must complete the challenge.

  • Room of Three Gargoyles - Olmec shuffles three cups. One has a ball. Select the cup with the ball.

  • The Wall Climb - Olmec holds a certain amount of fingers behind his back. Guess in 3 attempts how many fingers are held behind his back.

  • The Observatory - Spin a spinner until it lands on red, orange, or yellow.

  • The Heart Room - Spin a spinner until it lands on red or blue.

  • The Room of the Golden Idols - Olmec chooses an idol out of 5. Knock over the correct golden idol within 3 attempts.

  • Shrine of the Silver Monkey – Build a "monkey" out of blocks provided.

  • Torch Room - Bring light to the room and open 2 window blinds.

  • Mine Shaft - Destroy the wall by removing one block at a time.

  • Tomb of Ancient Kings - Remove the key out of the coffin.

  • The Swamp - Cut through all of the threads, one at a time (I didn't bring thread or scissors, so just say your name backwards 5 times.

  • The Throne Room – Olmec chooses one of three chairs. Sit on the correct chair.

  • Cave of Size - Sit in the chair from the previous round. Make your way to the nearest wall without touching the floor.

Challenge 8 - Russian Prison Escape

Creator Statement:

I am interested in the artwork and culture behind Russian prison tattoos, so I thought that it would be fun to make a game that is inspired by that. The breaking down walls serves as the unfolding mechanic, but as a player unfolds the walls, a series of obstacles also unfold.

Rules:

России побега из тюрьмы (Russian Prison Escape)

A Pocket Game for 2 players

The objective of this game is to simply break out of prison before your comrade does or before the breach is contained (time runs out).During each turn, a player can smash down a brick wall and proceed to the new space. Once a brick wall has been smashed, it remains smashed. However, some spaces have obstacles that can only be overcome if the prisoner has the correct item. Each player will start out with 2 items at random that are crucial to escaping a Russian prison.

The Four Items are:

  1. A bottle of Vodka – Needed to smash over the head of a guard and render him unconscious.

  2. A rusty needle – Needed to tattoo "BPAГ HAPOДA" forcibly on an outcast prisoner.

  3. A star tattoo – Needed to gain authority over the mass of prisoners in a cell.

  4. A bone of your deceased cell mate – Needed to distract a Caucasian Shepherd.

If you are to encounter an obstacle that you are not prepared to pass, you may barter with your comrade via these means and gain access to the item for the current turn only:

  1. камень,бумага, ножницы (Rock Paper Scissors) - Item granted only if you defeatyourcomrade 2/3 times.

  2. уставившиськонкурс (Staring Contest) - Item granted only if you defeat your opponent inastaring contest.

If you fail to successfully with your comrade, then you stay within the obstacle space for the turn. If you fail to barterthree rounds in a row, then you are temporarily captured by prison guards and taken back to therecreation grounds (start space). Despite being captured, you will proceed as usual in the next round.

To Begin:

  1. Each prisoner must choose one of the four walls. This will be the direction you begin heading in.

  2. Each prisoner will close their eyes and pick 2 items at random.

  3. Flip a ruble to see who goes first.

  4. Start a timer for 10 minutes and begin.
