Steph's Games Fall 2016

Challenge 1:

Make a game for 2 players, using an 8" x 8" playing surface (paper or other), 3 geometric solids, and a color spinner or a 30 second timer. The game rules should be written or typed onto a separate piece of paper. The game should be completable in 10 minutes max.

COLOR WAR GAME

COLOR WAR RULES

1.    2 person game

2.  To start the game each player must spin a primary color and if spun move to that color on the board.  If a secondary color is spun the other player gets a chance to start or take their turn.

3.    After both players have landed on primary colors the game continues with each player using the spinner to take their turn.  If a primary color is spun the player simply moves their token to that closest color on board.  For example, if player 1 spins red they would move their token to the closest red space on the board.  However, if a secondary color were spun the player would move their token to other primary color that makes up the secondary color that was spun.  For example, if the player’s token was currently on red and orange was spun; player 1 would move their token to the next yellow space on the board.  However, if no correct combination is possible the player must use the block.  This could occur if the player’s token was on a secondary color and spun another secondary color.  At that time the player can use the block and place it on any part of the board for one turn of their opponents to prevent their opponent from landing on a certain part of the board.

4. If the player spins and lands on rainbow they can choose whatever next color piece to land on.  If the player lands an a part of the boards with a black dot the player must skip a turn, if the player lands on a part of a board with a white dot the player may move head two spaces.

5.  The player wins when their token lands in the end space.

Materials List: 1 8x8 board, 1 color spinner, 3 geometric tokens

Critique:

There were some challenges with the rules of the game.  I did not anticipate for all the possible color combination outcomes.  The players had issue with landing on a secondary color but unable to spin the correct primary color.  During game play one of the players was continually blocked through out the game making game play really difficult.

Challenge 2:

Make a game for 3 players, using an 8.5" x 14" playing surface (paper or other), any (non-zero) number of figurative (looking like people or animals) tokens, with no spinners nor dice, where victory is achieved by (at least) two of the players collaborating. The game rules should be written or typed onto a separate sheet of paper. The game must be completable in 10 minutes max, and learnable in 5 minutes max (a total time envelope of 15 minutes).

JURASSIC WORLD GAME

JURASSIC WORLD RULES:

3 players

Each player has to decide the role they want to play either dinosaurs or meeple (1 & 2)

If you play the role of the of the meeple the goal is to safely get the other side of the board with all the important resources collected and avoid being eaten by dinosaurs

If you play the role of the meeple people the goal is to eat the meeple people and prevent them from reaching the safe space or collecting resources

meeple movement across board - move only one space forward, backward, sideways, or diagonal

dinosaurs  - move only 1 space forward, backward, + sideways, can only attack forward, sideways, can move 2 dinosawrs at a time

meeple start, each meeple takes a turn then the dinosaur

dinosaur player can move 2 dinos can not attack in the cage halt to leave

Materials List: Gameboard, 3 meeple, 5 paper resources, 5 plastic dinosaurs

Critique:

Clarify what happens if one meeple player dies.  What happens to there resources.  Can/ Should meeple attach dinosaurs?  Make it so 2 players attack at the same time?  Can you return back to the start if you are running from the dinosaurs? What happens when meeple land on a space occupied by a dinosaur? Additional options for claiming the resource Spielberg?

Challenge 3:

Formal Constraints:

  1. Materials:

    1. One sheet of blank paper to record rules

    2. One gridded surface to use for gameplay, you may choose the size of the grid units and the size of the surface

    3. Two figure (i.e. human shaped) tokens

    4. You may use abstract shapes to indicate setting or barriers

  2. Using one, and only one, mechanic

    1. create a non-violent game that places two players in opposition

    2. each player will be represented by one of the figurative tokens

    3. the gameplay will occur on the gridded surface

    4. movement rules cannot be dictated by a dice roll

  3. Gameplay duration cannot exceed 10 minutes from start of play to finish.

HELPING HAND GAME

HELPING HAND GAME RULES:

Goal: To claim the most spaces on the game board

to play: a player draws a card in the deck and must complete the task on that card.  The numbers on the card indicate how many spaces the player can claim on the board.  However, , the person you are helping determines how many spaces you can claim.

Claim the spots using colored tokens.  Once a space has been claimed the other player cannot take the spot.

To win the play that has the most places claimed on the game board wins.

If there is a tie the players must decide among themselves to determine the winner - has to be non violent.

Materials List: Board Game, Cards, 2 cube tokens, foam markers

Critique:

The overall critique for this game was solidifying the overall rules for the game.  For example, How specifically do the players move to claim the space.  What to do if there are no observers for the game (specifically cards that involve other people). Make it a clear rule that the competitor can't decide the amount of points or how well a job is done.

Challenge 4:

 Conceptual Restraint about nervousness

SURVIVOR GAME

Survivor Rules

Goal: To save as many meeple as possible!

1-13 players

Unfortunately, the meeple people have come into some very bad luck recently.  They were all going on vacation to meepleopolis! However, midway through  flight their plane crashed and the meeple are currently falling from the sky.

Direct their fall and try to save them by aiming them towards the islands to survive.  You have one minuet total! Place the game board on the ground and take 10 steps back.  Try to throw the meeple on the islands.  If the meeple don’t make it on to the game board they have died.  The meeple that make it on to the islands survive.  The meeple that land in the ocean of the game board still have a chance of surviving! You can push them back to the island but without the use of your hands or feet.

Players how have saved the most meeple win!

There is no limit to how many meeple players can throw, however, each player must have the same number of meeple.

Materials List:

lots of various color meeples, gameboard

Critique:

This was a really fun game to the play, however, the conceptual restraint was not really felt by the players.  The constraint was more abstract as you could say that the meeple were the ones that were nervous.  The distance between the players and the game board had to adjusted through out the game play.  The best distance is actually about 5 steps not ten. The gameboard could have been slightly bigger or not even a gameboard at all.  The meeple kept sliding off the board so we experimented by through into a bowl lined with various materials which helped this problem slightly.

Challenge 5:

Revist and refine a previous game

For this challenge I decided to revisit my Jurassic Park Game.  Because of some of the critique when the game was first played I changed about 3 major aspects of the game.  I added a rule that if a meeple died and if one meeple was still alive they would have to go rescue their resources if they had collected any.  I also changed as aspect of the movement.  If a dinosaur and a meeple were on the same space they would have to draw a card to determine the outcome.  The last thing that I adjusted was the amount a power the Spielburg resource had.  The Spielburg resource in this version had the power to adjust the position of 2 dinosaurs on the game board twice.

JURASSIC WORLD GAME (REVIST)

Jurassic Game (re-visit) Rules

 Number of Players: 3

Player Roles: 2 players must play the role of the meeples and 1 person must play the role of the dinosaurs.  The players must make dinosaur calls to decide the role assignment.  Who ever has the best dinosaur call is can decide what roll they want to play.

Goals: If you are the meeple your goal is to collect your resources and make to safety before the dinosaurs can get you.

If you are dinosaurs your goal is to prevent the meeple people from collecting any resourses and eating them. NomNomNomNom!

Movement: Meeple can move in any direction one space.  Dinosaurs can move left,  right, up, and down.  Dinosaurs can only attack forward and sideways.

Play:

-       The meeple players take their turn first then the dinosaur player.  The person playing the role of the dinosaur can move two dinosaurs in one turn.

-       The dinosaurs have to leave their cages in order to move or attack (this will count as one turn).

-       The dinosaurs don’t want to return to their cages therefore the meeple are allowed to use them is a safe space for one turn.

-       If a meeple and a dinosaur are on the same space the meeple player must draw a card to determine how the interaction occurs.

-       If a meeple dies and the other meeple surviving must most go collect the players resources

Resources:

-There are five resources: amber, water, food, dinosaur guidebook, and Spielberg.

 - The most important resource to collect is Spielberg.  If you have acquired this resource you have the option to send two Dinos back to their cage at any point in the game.  A dinosaur and a meeple cannot occupy the same cage. This game play can occur only twice.

Materials List: Gameboard, 3 meeple, 5 paper resources, 5 plastic dinosaurs

Better Documentation:

Critique:

Some of the rules were unclear. I forgot to clarify that the cards should only be used when the meeple choose to enter a space with a dinosaur.  Otherwise that didn't give the dinosaur player enough advantage.  I also removed a rule in the middle of game plane that gave the person who collected Spielburg the ability to

Challenge 6:

Conceptual Constraint: make a game about rules.

DANTE'S INFERNO

Dante Inferno Rules:

2 Players

Goal: To reach the center of Hell before you are gobbled up by Satan

To start:

Each player must place their meeple on the starting place on the board.  Then players must read a section from dante’s inferno and whoever completes the most dramatic reading can go first.  Then the ten-minute timer must start.  Player one will spin the spinner to determine their first move.

To Play:

If you spin a blue or purple you can move one space or turn the circle you are on by one space.  If you spin a yellow or green you can move two spaces or turn a second circle by two spaces.  If you spin an orange or red you can move or spin three spaces.

If the meeple is red the player can only land on the red spaces, if the meeple is orange the player can only land on the orange spaces.  Both players can land on the white spaces.  To pass to the next circle the player must be on their color space and be able to move straight on to the other circle that has the same color space (either red or orange).  Every time time you move on to the next circle you must pick up card and proceed to accomplish the task (or punishment) on that card.  Who ever reaches the center of the gameboard wins.  If the timer finishes before either player has reached the center of the gameboard whoever is the furthest in wins.  If both players are on the same circle when the time runs out whoever has completed the punishments the best will win.

Material List: Gameboard, 2 meeple, cards

Critique:

Work on rules make the legible - especially the part where both players get the punishment.  Washers in between the board - maybe stronger paper? Spaces the equal amount or not - effect the visuals of the board.  This would be a cool VR game.

Challenge 7:

Conceptual Constraint: make a game that consumes itself

ZOMBIE BRAINS

Zombie Brain Rules:

Goal: To reach the safe spaces off the edge of the board before the zombie consumes you and your brains

How to Play:

Time for 10 minuets is set.

Players use the dye to determine how many spots they can move on the board.  If the spot is on an intersection they can determine which direction they would like to move.  Every minute one piece of the game board is removed having been consumed by the zombie.  First the inner pieces then the edge pieces from left to right.  The board pieces are numbered for proper removal.  If the player is on a piece that is removed they have one opportunity to role the dice a four or higher to move to a neighboring square.  If not the zombie will eat the player.  It is possible for both players to win!

Materials, dice, gameboard, zombie, 2 meeples

 Critique:

Perhaps laminate the game board to flatten out the game or make the topography a game element.

2 many lines

make the removal of the game pieces in random order

zombies dont really serve a game play purpose more for the conceptual idea

Challenge 8:

Challenge 8: Formal Constraint and Conceptual Constraint, at the same time: Unfolds, that is to say... the mechanic should be "unfolding", and the idea should be about unfolding.

Make your Fortune

Make Your Fortune Rules:

How to play:

Up to 6 players.

Every player gets 3 green pieces, 5 yellow pieces, 6 red pieces, and 7 blue pieces.

green = 10 points

yellow = 7 points

red = 6 points

blue = 3 points

The goal is get as many points as you can.  Start a timer for 10 minuets whoever as the most points after 10 minuets wins. You can gain points two ways.  The first way is to learn your fortune. The player can pick up a paper fortune and play it to determine how many coins are either gained or lost.  The second way to earn points is too bet with another player.  A player can not refuse another players challenge.  The first player bets of a certain amount of coins.  For example betting the first player can bet 2 red coins. The second player can bet more, equal to, or half of the second players bet.  So at the very least the second player must bet 1 red coin or 2 blue coins.  The player must draw a card to determine how the coins are won.  If no player can win the all the money is removed from the gain.

Critique:

reduce number of card to win or lose everything

limits on bets?

what to do if players dont have the amount of coins to match a bet

dont make the card arguable
