Lilliputian Leaf-Climbers

Four Lilliputians are lost in a forest where the leaves are large and heavy.  Unfortunately, it's autumn, and those leaves are falling right on top of them!  If they want to survive, they'll have to climb the ever-growing pile of leaves, while watching out for the ones that are still coming down.  Are you up to the task of surviving this forest?

Materials:

  • Four Meeple, each of a different color
  • One game board, consisting of a 6x6 square grid, with 1" spaces.
    • Columns should be numbered from 1 to 6 from left to right on the bottom edge in green
    • Rows should be numbered from 1 to 6 from bottom to top on the left edge in blue
  • One-inch square plastic chips, one set of 36 for each of the following colors:
    • Green
    • Yellow
    • Orange
    • Red
    • Purple
    • Blue
  • 36 round, translucent plastic chips
  • Two six-sided die - one green, one blue
  • One four-sided die
  • One twenty-sided die

Setup:

  1. There are four players
  2. Each player controls one Meeple
  3. Each player starts in one corner of the board
  4. Turn order bay be decided at random

Main Game Loop:

  1. The turn starts with any player rolling the twenty-sided die.  This many circular chips will be placed on the board.
    1. Withdraw from the pool of circular chips a number of chips equal to the value of the roll, and place them in their own pile.  This will be the "active chips pile."
    2. For each chip in the pile, determine its location on the board by rolling the two six-sided dice.
      1. The value of the green die roll corresponds to the column number written in green on the game board.
      2. The value of the blue die roll corresponds to the row number written in blue on the game board.
      3. The chip is placed on the square whose row and column match the dice roll as described previously.
      4. No more than TWO round chips may be placed on the same square per turn.  If in danger of violating this rule, re-roll and place the chip on a different square.
      5. No more than ONE round chip may be placed on a square which already has a purple square chip placed on it (see below).  If in danger of violating this rule, re-roll and place the chip on a different square.
      6. No round chips may be placed on a square which already has a blue square chip placed on it (see below).  If in danger of violating this rule, re-roll and place the chip on a different square.
  2. After the circular chips are placed on the board, each player rolls the four-sided die to move.
    1. The players can move only in the four cardinal directions - up, down, left, and right.
    2. The players need not move in a straight line.
    3. A player may climb a square chip or a stack of square chips using one move, plus one additional move for each square chip on that space higher than his current elevation.
      1. An elevation is defined as the number of square chips that a space has on it.  For example, a square with no square chips would have an elevation of zero, a square with 3 square chips would have an elevation of three.
      2. In the example above, moving from the square with zero square chips to the square with three, would cost four moves - one for the actual movement, plus one for each of the three square chips above the elevation of zero.  Similarly, to move from the square with three square chips to one with four square chips would cost two moves: one for the movement itself, and one for the additional square chip on the new square that is above the old square's elevation of three.
    4. A player may climb down from a square chip or a stack of square chips at a flat cost of two moves.
    5. Up to two players may occupy the same space at any given time.  Players may still traverse squares that have reached their maximum occupancy, provided that they do not end their movements on that square.
  3. Once all the players have moved, each round chip on the map is replaced by one square chip.
    1. Any players occupying a square on which a square chip is placed automatically loses the game and is removed from the map. (The player can opt to leave his Meeple on the map, crushed by the leaves, if he so chooses and has a morbid sense of humor.  Even in this case, he is counted as no longer on the map for purposes of gameplay.)
    2. The square chips placed on the map must be color-coded by the elevation they will occupy:
      1. Elevation 1: Green
      2. Elevation 2: Yellow
      3. Elevation 3: Orange
      4. Elevation 4: Red
      5. Elevation 5: Purple
      6. Elevation 6: Blue

Victory Condition:

Any players still on the board once all the square chips have been placed on the map, win.  If three players lose before all the square chips are placed, the survivor wins.
