Angry Monsters

Premise

Monsters have awakened in the Pacific Ocean near a coastal city, and they're hungry and cranky!  Will anyone escape their wrath before the city is destroyed?

Materials

  • 50 Meeple
  • 2 dinosaur tokens
  • 2 six-sided die
  • 50+ square colored plastic chips
  • 4 translucent circular colored chips
  • 1 washable game board, square spaces, X"xY"
  • 1 blue magic marker

Setup

  • Monsters always go first.  The order of monster turns is determined by who can make the best kaiju roar.  The best roar goes first.
  • Create a shoreline on the board by coloring a number of squares blue.  These will be water squares.  The shoreline may be of any shape, as long as all players agree.
  • All buildings and Meeple must be placed before the game starts.
  • Buildings are placed first.   The buildings can have any distribution agreeable to all players, but the Meeple must be distributed fairly evenly around the map.
  • A building and a Meeple may not occupy the same square.  The same holds true for evac sites while Meeple are being placed.
  • Monsters start in water, as far from land as possible.

Objectives

The monster players' goal is to destroy as many buildings as possible before all Meeple have been removed from the board.  The human player's goal is to evacuate as many Meeple as possible before they are all removed from the board.  The game ends when all Meeple are removed from the board.

Monster Rules (Destroy!!!)

  • Each turn, a monster player rolls 1 six-sided die.  He can then move across that many squares in eight directions.  He doesn't have to move in a straight line.
  • Every time a monster eats a Meeple, he gets 2 extra squares added to his potential movement. Monsters eat meeple by landing on the same square as that Meeple, which he then keeps.
  • Monsters cannot traverse buildings.
  • Monsters can destroy buildings by paying a number of potential moves determined by the color of the building.  Prices are:
    • Red/Orange - 1 move
    • Yellow/Green - 2 moves
    • Blue/Violet - 3 moves
    • Evac site - 4 moves
  • Monsters can only destroy buildings to which they are adjacent in one of the four cardinal directions.

Human Rules (Run awaaaaaaaay!!!)

  • Each turn, the player rolls two six-sided die, or replaces an evac site (see below).  He can then make any number of moves less than or equal to the value of the roll.  A move consists of moving a Meeple from one square to an adjacent square in the four cardinal directions.
  • To replace an evac site, the player replaces the site at a location of his choosing and replaces three evacuated Meeple on the board at random locations.
  • Meeple cannot traverse buildings.  Meeple can traverse water, but moving between a land square and a water square costs two moves.
  • Once a Meeple lands on the same square as an evac site, it is evacuated.  The human player then removes it from the board and keeps it.

Victory Conditions

If the human player evacuated more Meeple than were eaten by both monsters, the human player wins.  If not, he loses, and the monster player who destroyed the most buildings wins.  If there is a draw, the players involved attempt to imitate Darth Vader.  The most successful imitation wins.
